NP Neuro ICU - Louisiana

Job description

· Support staff: Nursing, RT, NCC attending, +/- additional APPs
· Amount of coverage needed per month: 12-16 NIGHT shifts (blocked shifts preferred for travelers)
· Patients per day: 10-20 patients, will not see them all but see based on acuity
· Patient population/age: Adult ICU (>18yo) with primary neurologic diagnosis
· Department description: Neuro ICU - 24 hour APP in house coverage with neurointensivist support (formal daily rounding; phone availability overnight); comprehensive adult ICU patient management (closed unit) with primary neurologic diagnoses
· EMR: EPIC
· Hospital bed size: 420 beds

Skills & Responsibilities

Patient Care

Facilitate patient admission, treatment, and discharge

Conduct daily patient rounds

Provide direct care per approved protocols

Initiate referrals and specialty consults

Educate patients on conditions and care plans

Documentation

Complete medical records for physician co-signature, including:

History & Physical (H&P)

Consult notes

Progress notes

Discharge summaries

Procedures & Clinical Skills

Wound care (debridement, dressing changes, cultures, packing/drain removal)

Minor superficial surgical procedures

Incision and drainage of superficial abscesses

Suture removal (per surgeon direction)

Nasogastric tube insertion/removal

Urinary catheterization

Venipuncture

Routine immunizations

Critical Care

Manage critically ill patients, including:

Mechanical and noninvasive ventilation

Hemodynamic monitoring systems

Analgesia and sedation

Perform critical care procedures:

Bag-mask ventilation

Laryngeal mask airway insertion

Neurology / Critical Care Knowledge

Neurologic exams and localization

Neuroimaging and EEG interpretation

Stroke care (revascularization & secondary prevention)

Intracerebral and subarachnoid hemorrhage

Traumatic brain injury (TBI)

Intracranial pressure management

Status epilepticus

Neuromuscular respiratory failure

Ventilation management in critical care

Acid-base and electrolyte (sodium) disorders

Fever and infection management

Antithrombotic therapy and reversal

Cardiac arrest management

Brain death determination
