Be a catalyst for change inside the walls of Kern County detention facilities. As a Correctional Psychiatrist, you'll support one of California’s most vulnerable populations—incarcerated individuals—by delivering trauma-informed, forensic-focused mental healthcare and facilitating continuity of care after release.
✅ Key Responsibilities
✔️ Conduct Competency to Stand Trial (CST) evaluations under Penal Code 1369 and prepare reports for court proceedings
✔️ Manage opioid withdrawal with buprenorphine/naloxone following CDCR formulary guidelines
✔️ Develop suicide prevention and safety plans for inmates with high-risk behavioral profiles (e.g., BPD, self-injury history)
✔️ Collaborate with probation officers and FQHCs to ensure post-release medication continuity, including 30-day antipsychotic supplies
✔️ Prepare for and provide expert testimony as needed in forensic matters
✅ What We’re Looking For
✔️ Active California Medical License (clean record)
✔️ ABPN Certification in Psychiatry (required); Forensic Psychiatry board certification strongly preferred
✔️ DEA Certified
✅ Schedule & Coverage
Full-Time (FTE)
✔️ 8-hour shifts (e.g., 7:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m. to align with jail intake processes)
✔️ 10–12 inmate evaluations per day, including competency assessments and legal report preparation
On-Call Rotation
✔️ 1–2 weekends/month for urgent forensic consults (with additional compensation)
